About
What is the Greater London Historic Environment Record (GLHER)?
The GLHER is a comprehensive and dynamic resource for the historic environment of the Capital city. From the earliest human occupation to the present day, GLHER data promotes better understanding of London's rich heritage, and supports development and regeneration through the work of the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service (GLAAS).
The online GLHER is constantly updated by the HER Team and volunteers. It is suitable for general and basic research, and will be of interest to local residents, community groups, and visitors to London.
Those interested in more complex research, or for commercial purposes (chargeable HER searches such as development, planning, or land management enquires) may use it for preliminary assessment, but should request a full search through our online booking system as additional data is provided, or available, by the HER as part of these searches.
For further information and advice on commercial HER searches, and the GLHER in general, please read the GLHER Access and Charging Policy here, or contact the HER team directly for advice.
How to use the GLHER online
Detailed guidance for general users on how to use the GLHER Online system is available at the link below. You can also access this help documentation in the application by clicking on the help button in the top right.
We will be producing helpful short videos over the coming months.
Volunteering with GLHER
We have opportunities for enthusiastic volunteers, of all ages and backgrounds, to enhance the Greater London Historic Environment Record, and help protect and promote London's rich and diverse heritage.
Whether this is for work experience, starting out on a career in the cultural heritage sector, or just for fun, we can provide full training and support.
Past and current volunteer projects include:
- London's historic parks and gardens
- First World War auxiliary hospitals, and
- Thames foreshore sites and finds
Other projects are in development, and we are also interested to hear suggestions for future projects.
For more information please contact the HER Team.
